Revision rhinoplasty is the name given to rhinoplasty or rhinoplasty operations performed as a result of unexpected problems encountered in the appearance or function of the nose after undergoing rhinoplasty. Revision rhinoplasty is also called “secondary rhinoplasty”.
It is a normal situation that rhinoplasty operations do not meet the expectations, and the need for a re-intervention because the unwanted appearance or health problem in the nose cannot be eliminated. Revision rhinoplasty surgery is required at a rate of 3% to 15% after rhinoplasty operations.
Revision rhinoplasty is performed for minor aesthetic interventions such as nose corrections and contours, as well as for the elimination of major structural problems in the nose. Problems such as tissue loss and respiratory distress require revision rhinoplasty surgery. In revision rhinoplasty, attention is paid to preserving the natural appearance as well as eliminating the problems experienced by the people after the first surgery.
Revision rhinoplasty is considered a more difficult procedure than primary rhinoplasty. Operation on previously treated tissues, bones and cartilages increases the difficulty of the surgery. The fact that the revision rhinoplasty surgery is more difficult increases the need for an experienced doctor.
Revision rhinoplasty is performed due to many problems that occur in the process after rhinoplasty surgery. Issues requiring revision rhinoplasty are listed below.
Revision rhinoplasty is performed at least 6 months later. The reason for this is that it is not clear whether revision is required due to swelling after the first rhinoplasty surgery. In cases where there is no obvious defect in the nose, it is understood after the swelling has subsided whether a surgery is needed again. After the first rhinoplasty surgery, the swelling goes down in 1-3 months.
Revision rhinoplasty can be performed without the development of tight connective tissues, without a complete recovery in the nose and skin, in cases where there is a significant crookedness in the nose or the nose is made very small compared to the face.
Revision rhinoplasty is seen as a more difficult procedure than the first rhinoplasty surgery. This is because during the first rhinoplasty surgery, some of the bone structures and cartilage tissues were removed or bent, that is, their shape changed. However, changes in tissues are also observed in rhinoplasty surgeries.
It is much more risky to perform surgery on treated tissues and bones, compared to an operation performed on the normal anatomy of individuals who have never been touched. It is necessary to be more careful when working on previously treated bone, cartilage and tissues. However, the healing of tissues and skin after revision rhinoplasty surgery may take longer than the first rhinoplasty surgery.
Revision rhinoplasty is performed with an open or closed approach under general anesthesia or local anesthesia, depending on the size of the operation to be performed on the nose. Problems that require a small correction are performed with local anesthesia and closed approach. Small-scale revision rhinoplasty surgery takes an average of 35-40 minutes. Revision rhinoplasty surgery is performed with general anesthesia and open approach in problems that require a major procedure. Revision surgery takes an average of 3-6 hours for problems that require larger procedures. The duration of the operation varies according to the size of the deformity in the nose and the procedure to be applied.
